Postpartum Recovery: The Top 3 Things Every Mom Should Do

Whether you’re in the thick of newborn snuggles or just beginning to feel like yourself again, the postpartum period is a powerful time of transition. It’s not just about healing from birth—it’s about reclaiming your body, reconnecting with yourself, and finding strength in a new season of life.

As a pelvic floor physical therapist (and a mom!), here are the top three things I recommend for every woman in the postpartum chapter:

1. Reconnect with Your Core and Pelvic Floor

Your body has done something incredible—and it deserves care and attention. After birth, the muscles of your core and pelvic floor have been stretched and challenged. Gentle breathwork and deep core engagement can help restore strength, function, and stability in a safe, intentional way.

These early movements may seem simple, but they are the foundation of your recovery. Start small. Start smart. Your body will thank you.

2. Balance Rest and Movement

In those early weeks, you need rest—but you also need movement. Short walks, gentle stretches, and mobility work can help prevent stiffness, support circulation, and ease discomfort from nursing and baby-holding positions. You don’t have to “bounce back”—you just need to build back with compassion.

Listen to your body. Some days call for a nap, others for a few minutes of movement. Both are wins.

3. See a Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist

Your six-week checkup doesn’t tell the whole story. A pelvic floor therapist can assess for diastasis recti, prolapse, scar tissue restrictions, muscle imbalances, and more—even if you don’t have obvious symptoms. Early support helps prevent long-term issues and gives you confidence as you return to daily life, intimacy, and exercise.

This is care that should be standard—but often isn’t. You deserve more than “you’re cleared.”
